Why this matters
A packaging company that only stocks one material has a commercial incentive to recommend it regardless of fit. A company that stocks both, and is willing to recommend either depending on the application, has no such incentive. Its recommendations can be trusted because they are not motivated by what happens to be on the shelf.
This is FGP's position. We sell HDPE air cushion systems, paper void fill systems, and padded paper systems. If appropriate, we recommend whichever the evidence supports. For most e-commerce applications, or any pack and send operations involving lightweight to medium-weight goods, that is air cushion packaging. Our largest range of film sizes means we'll help find the optimum-size air cushions for your products and boxes. And these are produced on-deamdn in your pack area by one of our range of 3 systems. This means the best-fit system for your volume and operational needs. But for a specific and well-defined set of applications, the better fit option is paper packaging. Similalry, various papers are dispensed by one of 3 dispensers, again depending on your operational needs. Low volume users have the no-dispenser and simple paper in box option.
Understanding where paper wins — and why — is not a concession to the paper-is-greener narrative. It is proof that our science-led approach is genuine rather than selective.
Where paper wins: the protection argument
The primary reason paper void fill is the right choice for certain applications has nothing to do with environmental fashions and everything to do with physics.
Air cushions provide excellent protection for lightweight and medium-weight items. They conform to irregular shapes, prevent movement in all directions, and absorb impact through compression and recovery. For the fragile, the light, and the awkwardly shaped, air cushions are the right answer.
For heavy, dense, and bulky items —engineering components, automotive parts, industrial equipment, metal fittings— the equation changes. Heavy items require cushioning that can with stand compressive load without collapsing. An air cushion under significant sustained weight will deform and may not provide adequate protection. Paper void fill, particularly padded paper systems, has genuine compressive strength. It can bear load, resist compression, and maintain its protective function under the weight of heavy industrial items throughout a transit journey.
This is the application where paper genuinely wins — not because paper is a greener material, but because it is a better protective material for this specific use case. And as we established earlier in this series, protection performance is an environmental metric in its own right. Packaging that fails generates an environmental cost that no amount of recycled content or recyclability can offset.
FGP's paper range
We offer three paper void fill systems, each suited to different volume and application requirements.
Manual Paper Void Fill System — for lower demand environments. Paper is pulled through the machine and torn off at the required length. Simple, reliable, and suited to operations where paper is used intermittently rather than continuously.
Automatic Paper Void Fill System — for higher demand environments. The operative presses a button or foot pedal to auto-feed the required amount of paper. Three operation modes, three ergonomic positions, adjustable height — designed for the packing station rather than as an after thought to it.
Padded Paper System — for protecting fragile, larger, or heavier items. The system's gear mechanism produces a three-dimensional pad rather than a flat sheet, significantly increasing cushioning and void fill capacity. Multiple packing techniques are possible, and pre-set size and quantity options allow efficient, consistent packing. This is the system for industrial, automotive, and engineering applications where compressive strength and robust cushioning are the priority.
Paper-In-Box and Void Fill Rolls — the no-system option
For customers with low, sporadic, or unpredictable paper void fill requirements, we also supply paper cushioning without any machine at all. The Paper-box is a practical dispenser box containing 250 metres of 100% natural recycled paper — simply pull out the required amount, tear it off, and use it. No machine, no setup, no up front cost, no commitment. A roll-only option is also available for customers who prefer to work without or reuse the dispenser box.
This is the most accessible entry point to paper void fill — ideal for businesses that need paper occasionally rather than continuously, or who want to trial paper for certain product lines before committing to a machine-based system. As with everything in our range, there is no minimum order quantity.
All three systems are available with no minimum order quantity — the same accessibility principle that applies across FGP's full range.
Respecting customer preferences
We have spent this series making an evidence-based case for the materials and systems that we believe deliver the best environmental outcomes. But we also recognise that not every customer reaches a packaging decision purely on the basis of LCA science — and we respect that.
Some businesses operate paper-only or no-plastic policies for reasons that go beyond the material science. A brand whose products carry a natural, artisan, or eco-conscious identity may have a genuine commercial reason to maintain paper packaging throughout their customer experience — because their customers expect it, and that expectation is part of what they are selling. Others may have made commitments to their own customers, or be operating within procurement policies set at a corporate level.
For customers in this position, our approach is the same: we share what we know honestly, explain the science, and gently offer the broader picture. But we follow the customer's lead. If paper is the right answer for their business context — even if it is not the lowest-impact material — we will supply the best paper void fill solution for their needs and help them do it well.
Packaging decisions happen in the real world, where brand identity, customer relationships, and commercial context are as real as LCA data. Our job is to be honest and informed advisers — not to override the decisions of the businesses we serve.
The honest environmental picture for paper
We would be doing our readers a disservice if we simply said "paper wins for heavy items" without acknowledging the environmental dimension honestly.
Paper void fill is a heavier material than HDPE film. The weight disadvantage that drives paper's poor LCA performance in bag comparisons applies here too. A padded paper pad weighs significantly more than the equivalent volume of inflated air cushion. The production energy, transport emissions, and waste at end of life are correspondingly higher.
But the environmental calculation changes when protection performance is included. A padded paper system that reliably protects a heavy engineering component from damage has a lower total environmental footprint than a lighter air cushion system that fails to do so —because the environmental cost of a damaged heavy component, requiring remanufacture or disposal, is far greater than the material difference between the two packaging options.
Paper wins for heavy items not despite its weight but because its weight-bearing capacity is what the application requires. The physics and the environmental logic point in the same direction.
A point on litter — a compilation of statistically-based scientific litter studies conducted across the US and Canada over 18 years consistently found that plastic bags make up less than 1%of litter. And over 80% of littering is intentional — a human behaviour problem, not a material problem. Replacing plastic with paper means ten times more litter by weight. And the degradation statistics of each material might surprise people too. A topic for other articles.
The conclusion of Series A
This piece closes the material science series with what we hope is its most important message: sustainable packaging is not about choosing the material that sounds greenest. It is about choosing the material that is right for the application — because only the right material protects reliably, and only packaging that protects reliably avoids the hidden environmental costs that damage and returns generate.
For most applications, the science is unambiguous. HDPE air cushion film — lightweight, predominantly air, 50%recycled content, fully recyclable, exempt from UK Plastic Packaging Tax — is the lowest impact protective packaging material available.
For heavy, dense, industrial items, padded paper systems are the right choice — not because paper is fashionably sustainable, but because the physics of protection demands it.
That distinction — made honestly, backed by evidence, and acted on in our product recommendations — is what we mean when we say no greenwashing.
